Flight Case - Pianola Case

Pianola Flight Case

George Michael Stage Roof
Rex Lawson, king of the British pianola
Just when you think you have made every type of flight case for keyboards the phone rings from the one and only Rex Lawson, pianolist extraordinary who requires a flight case for a concert in San Francisco.

Rex Lawson's name is the world's foremost exponent of the pianola; not the brash, mechanical variety found in cowboy films and backstreet bars, but rather the original foot-operated form of the player-piano. These originals are wheeled in front and above the keyboard of any normal concert grand piano and with Rex using pedals to supply air it 'performs' by means of a set of felt-covered wooden 'fingers' which plays the actual piano.

To measure the pianola for the flight case Rex had invited me in to his studio & workshop, which was an amazing Aladdin's cave with a pianolas, a grand piano and even an large organ, many in state of being lovingly restored. This is not to mention his library walls of over ten thousand music rolls along with a beast of an antique machine with which to punch the encoded paper scrolls, one hole for each note, which by some magical wizardry had been adapted to allow a modern day computer to control it. When the pianola is played, each time a perforation in the roll corresponds with a hole on the tracker-bar, air is then allowed to pass through that hole and down a small tube. The air activates a pneumatic valve mechanism which channels suction to a small bellows. As the bellows collapses, motion is generated which causes the afore mentioned mechanical 'finger' to strike a piano key.

Just as I had finished having a good poke around with Rex taking time out to explain it all to me, Denis Hall, another pianola enthusiast arrived, which was lucky, as the pianola that required a case was in bits. It took the two experts to reassemble it and gave me a true insight into the workings of these fascinating instruments. We finally got round to talking about the flight case design and taking measurements which we followed up by some excellent coffee back in the house.

Someone once said 'An evening with Rex Lawson, king of the British pianola, is always interesting, often fascinating, and never less than fun.' - And I can confirm, daytimes are no different!

Rex has given concerts in Europe and North America, in fact in no less than fifteen countries around the globe in the last thirty years, from Carnegie Hall to the Last Night of the Proms, with conductors from Pierre Boulez to Sir Andrew Davis. Rex has also broadcast on hundreds of occasions around the world and is well represented on both LP and CD.

Take a little time out and check out further details at and also the The Pianola Institute.
